One of the better, more in depth, more interesting splinters from Asimov’s laws of robotics comes from Madeline Ashby. It was a Kitschies nominee – and a worthy one. Top-quality worldbuilding and a minimum of first author fuss. Amy is a Von Neumann machine: a self-replicating artificial intelligence, programmed not to harm humans, although Amy can, after an encounter where she – literally – eats her grandmother, apparently absorbing her powers and other things. Vn delivers a story of love, high adventure, police chases, action – conflict layered on top of conflict. This is a first-class first effort from Ashby, well worth a read.
