Work Experience
2008 Man Group, PLC [Alternative investments, FTSE50]
Organisational Design and Communications consultant
I worked in a team of four alongside senior (C-level) members of the organisation in order to identify, analyse, and preserve the entrepreneurial culture of the global leader in Alternative Investments in the face of astonishing growth. We used inductive (ethnographic interviews & observation), and deductive (organisational and structural analysis) to coordinate changes across the fifteen global offices.
2005-2007 Perlegen Sciences, USA [Genotyping and personalized medicine, privately held]
Internal IT Consultant
I planned, built, and managed a high availability, scalable IT infrastructure including P-Series servers, SAN and NAS, and Oracle platform migration using internal resources and consultants. I managed three offices in two countries with a team of only three people, all while balancing budget and complex engineering requirements, and coordinating between operations, lab, bioinformatics, and Senior Management.
1998-2006 Mehn-line Consulting, USA [Multiple industries]
Strategic start-up consultant – select projects
2004-2005 LookSmart, Ltd, USA [Online advertising, public]
Business Intelligence Internal Consultant
I was the internal IT resource for the Business Intelligence unit. This role required complex coordination across several departments, including TCO and ROI analysis, right-sizing IT strategy, and managing external consultants.
1999-2004 SquareTrade, Inc,USA[Online dispute resolution, privately held]
Head of IT
I was the fourth employee at this company, and built its technical infrastructure from the ground up. I managed often-conflicting requirements from all departments in a start-up environment and drove communications between Operations and Engineering, resulting in fast development/release cycles with higher operational uptimes. I supervised 5 people.
2001-2006 Black Rock City, LLC [Burning Man]
IT Team Lead (Part time)
I managed a diverse, global, remote group of volunteers and paid staff across all departments, building the technology infrastructure to build a temporary city of 45000 annually. I was constantly challenged to come up with creative solutions, including linking a temporary community in the middle of the desert to the Internet, web casting the entire event, and a process to manage thousands of volunteers across the globe.
1998-1999 TriStrata [Secure document handling, privately held]
Systems Administrator
I was responsible for the internal network and desktop systems at this company, including capacity planning and bottleneck analysis.
1995-1998 The Space Between, USA [Multi/interdisciplinary arts production nonprofit]
Founder, designer, producer
The Space Between grew out of work that myself and several artists and designers were doing in New Orleans. I learned to work with large groups of people, negotiate, and find win-win outcomes in all things. I managed all aspects of the business, from PR to production to fundraising to graphic design to taking out the trash.
1992-1998 Glen Mehn Design, USA [Theatre and Film]
Lighting Designer, Scenic Designer, electrician, carpenter, director
A designer in nonprofit arts learns to minimize waste and reuse everything, while managing diverse groups of people and juggling complex schedules.
