This multilayered work is stunning. It has character, and relationship, and time shifting, and (maybe) spooky action at a tistance, which also might be parallel universes, which might be the same thing, or could just be magic. Ruth, a writer, finds some rubbish on her beach which might be washed up from the Tsunami in Japan. Inside is a journal, a watch, and some ancient letters. Ruth starts reading the story of Nao, a young girl having very atypical problems with her adolescence. Her life starts out rough, and keeps getting worse. Characters? Ideas? It has them all, in spades.

n.b. – this book is on the shortlist for The Kitschies Red Tentacle, an organisation on whose board I sit.
